ELP Annual Review 2019

With the support of the Cambridge Conservation Initiative an unique Endangered Landscapes Programme is being implemented in about 10 countries. SABUKO has a honor to lead a project titled Restoring Gallery Forest and Grasslands in the Iori River Valley in Georgia.

This report reviews all the amazing work done within the frames of the programme.

Pasture Management Plan for The Chachuna Managed Reserve

The overall objective of the presented pasture management recommendations is to provide estimated stocking rates and a provisional rotational grazing scheme for the pasture area of the Chachuna Managed Reserve. The plan should serve a basis for a future leasing contract that meets the requirements of a protected area.

Overview of Pasture Management Legislation

Since January the 1st, 2019 ‘’Society for Nature Conservation – SABUKO’’ has been working for the restoration of gallery forests and grasslands in the Iori river valley. Condition of the land cover over 748.1 ha in Chachuna Managed reserve (total area of Chachuna Managed Reserve is 5032 ha) was evaluated within the project.

Hydrological Report on the River Iori

Hydrological report will enable us to assess precisely the impact of the reservoirs on the hydrological regime of the river, on the one hand and to determine the volume of water required for flooding the gallery forests, which could possibly be released from the Dali Mountain reservoir on the other hand

Assessing the scale of hunting of birds with a focus on Batumi Bottleneck

Illegal killing is one of the main risks for the birds becoming extinct globally.Poaching birds became one of the major threats for bird migrating between Europe and Africa. Every autumn more than 1,000,000+ birds of prey migrate through the Batumi Bottleneck. Batumi Raptor Count (BRC) along with SABUKO work on monitoring and conserve birds which migrate through the Batumi Bottleneck.

Birds in the Chorokhi delta in spring 2015

In spring 2015 the Chorokhi river delta (Ajara, Georgia) South of the city of Batumi survey was held by Rinse van der Vliet on behalf of the Dutch Avifaunistic Circle (AKN), section of the Netherlands Ornithologists Union, which mainly is an overview of the bird observations in and around the Chorokhi delta (from here on the ‘delta’) in the period from 30 April to 8 May and from 12 to 13 May 2015.

Restoring Gallery Forest and Grasslands in The Iori River Valley, Georgia

This document presents a description and assessment of Iori River Gallery Forest, definition of their natural boundaries, comparison with the present boundaries and identification of causes of changes

Assessment Report of Iori River Gallery Forest

The objective of the research was to describe and evaluate condition of the Iori River Gallery forests, define their natural borders, compare with present-day boundaries and to identify causes of change; also, to identify whether or not the Dali reservoir reduced the area of gallery forests in Chachuna Managed Reserve and whether it effected to the change of their floristic composition.

Birds in the Chorokhi delta in spring 2018

In spring 2018, SABUKO (Society for Nature Conservation) carried out monitoring   birds of the Chorokhi  river delta (Ajara, Georgia), South of the city of Batumi. Monitoring was carried out by Zurab Gurgenidze and Dachi Shoshitashvili, who are currently employed by SABUKO. Monitoring was carried out from 2nd of April till 12th of April of 2018.
