The objective of the research is to highlight the current status of the sheep sector and to identify the challenges that the mentioned sector is facing today.
The study analyses data provided by the National Statistics Office of Georgia and the Ministry of Environment Protection and Agriculture of Georgia, various researches and information obtained through in-depth interviews with the representatives of the mentioned sector. There are many challenges in the sheep sector. Development and implementation of the solutions to these problems will help to improve the situation of the sector. However, it is important to consider recommendations that are relevant to the sustainable development of the sector:
As of today, an excessive number of sheep are observed on pastures. Intensive grazing contributes to the deterioration of the pasture conditions. It is recommended to develop pasture management plans according to the regions of Georgia and further implement these plans in order to avoid overgrazing and degradation;
It is recommended to raise the awareness of farmers and shepherds about the need for current innovations, including the introduction of rotational grazing. It is Preferable to arrange demonstration plots for;
Improving access to animal medicines, veterinary services. Provision of periodic trainings for timely identification of animal diseases;
A flock of sheep has to move long distances to drink water, which causes decrease in the weight of the sheep. It is reasonable to arrange a water consumption spots near the farms;
Improving the fur shearing experience. Training in these activities is required. Besides, it is desirable to introduce wool classification experience;
Development of small and medium-sized enterprises for wool processing, which will contribute to the development of the wool value chain and reduce the amount of waste /burnt wool;
Improving the hygienic conditions of sheep milking and diversifying the manufactured products in order to increase further sales. E.g., cheese, milk, etc.
